COWLIN CONSTRUCTION SECURES ADDITIONAL CONTRACT FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
Cowlin Construction, a Balfour Beatty company, has been awarded a £27 million contract by INTO, specialists in developing university campus facilities, to provide a three-storey academic building and student accommodation at the University of Exeter’s Streatham campus. The academic building will be built with a combination of glazed and masonry elevations. The student accommodation will comprise of 517 rooms, laundry facilities and communal spaces. Both projects are due for completion in 2011. This new contract follows Cowlin’s £77 million contract award in September 2009 to construct 1,948 student accommodation units, also located at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus. On this contract works are already underway with completion anticipated in late 2012. Cowlin Construction was appointed as a development partner, with University Partnerships Programme Limited (UPP), for the University of Exeter in October 2008, as part of a five-year framework to deliver the University’s £400 million capital investment programme. Since 1998 UPP have invested over £1 billion in higher education student accommodation projects with a further £1 billion planned in the next 4 years. Bob Clark, Cowlin Group Managing Director, commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded contracts which allow us to build on the excellent relationships we have with UPP, INTO and the University of Exeter. These projects will create training and employment opportunities within Cowlin and our well established local supply chain”.
