Balfour Beatty Awarded Prestigious Plymouth Life Centre Project
Having been recommended on 7th January Balfour Beatty’s official appointment by Plymouth City Council, to build the long awaited Life Centre leisure facility was announced today. The development of the Life Centre is Plymouth’s biggest ever investment in leisure facilities, and is intended to meet the city’s sporting needs well into the 21st century. Being able to offer a regional facility of this quality is a key factor in the wider regeneration plans for Central Park, which will help to attract further investment into Plymouth. The centre will replace the existing Mayflower Centre and Central Park Leisure Pools, both of which are due for demolition once the new facility is open for use. Balfour Beatty is already involved in a number of sports and leisure projects including the London 2012 Aquatics Centre for the Olympic Delivery Authority, the completed Sunderland Aquatic and Wellness Centre for Sunderland City Council and the Victoria Park swimming pool complex in Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Government. With construction starting immediately, the beginning of the project will be marked with a traditional turf cutting ceremony. Work on the centre is scheduled to be completed in September 2011. Commenting today, Bob Clark, Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern Managing Director said “We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the prestigious Life Centre project and look forward to working closely with Plymouth City Council. We will be drawing on all our skills and experience to ensure we deliver this first class leisure facility safely and by September 2011 utilising local resources wherever possible”
