COWLIN COMPLETES STUDENT ACCOMMODATION IN WINCHESTER Cowlin Construction, a Balfour Beatty company, recently handed over a £15.4 million first-class student accommodation project on programme and to budget to their customer, Domain, for students of the University of Winchester. The complex building consists of seven multi-storey timber frame blocks which provide 400 en-suite student bedrooms in 3-9 bed clusters, utilising pre-fabricated modular bathrooms and kitchens. The 18-month project demanded detailed logistical planning due to the location of the building within a 12,380sq metre footprint that has a 26-metre drop in topography across the site, and is situated between the university and a live hospital. The steep terrain and tightness of the access roads meant that there was no vehicular access allowed, instead two tower cranes provided the means to import all materials from the main road above the hospital and onto the site. Other challenges included bat relocation, tree protection zones, no parking facilities within miles of the site, and residential areas on all sides David Harris, Cowlin Divisional Managing Director, said: “The Cowlin project team and our supply-chain worked closely with our customer, Domain, to ensure we met their expectations and we are delighted to hand over the accommodation for the students of the University of Winchester to enjoy.’’ Niall Southwell of Domain, added: “Cowlin has demonstrated a professional, consistent and proactive approach throughout the whole delivery process on our challenging scheme in Winchester. The end product is a testimony to their hard work and it will be a facility which the University of Winchester and its students will be able to enjoy for many years to come. Well done all.” The University of Winchester contract follows a successful partnership with Domain [check this was customer - Yes] on the £16.07 million Maindy Road student accommodation project in Cardiff which was completed and handed over in 2006 for Cardiff’s University Students.
