Project: East Building
Client: University of Bath Value: £9.7m Contract: GC Works 1 Design & Build Duration: September 2009 - February 2011 BREEAM - “Excellent” rating. The East Building is a 3 storey, 4,110 sq m building of PCC frame and floor on raft foundations with curtain walling, timber cladding and render. Facilities include a 350 seat lecture theatre, a floor of general teaching accommodation and two floors of open plan office and administrative space. A central atrium allows for climate control, circulation and social space. The ETFE roof over the atrium is similar to the type used for the Eden Project in Cornwall. The atrium brings daylight into the depth of the building and doubles up as a ‘return air path’ for the Termodeck heating and ventilation system. Termodeck uses hollow precast concrete floor units as ventilation ducts in addition to forming an exposed soffit, enabling the mass of the units to regulate the internal temperature and reduce extreme fluctuations; thereby significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy use compared to a standard mechanically ventilated or air conditioned building of this type. Oak & Cedar cladding has been installed to the exterior walls of the amphitheatre and Polished Mastic Asphalt flooring, currently used in the BMW museum in Munich, has been installed to create an unusual effect. A substantial bank of photovoltaic panels is positioned on the roof, offsetting approximately 10% of the carbon emissions of the building. A display meter is positioned in the public area of the building demonstrating to students and staff the efficiency of the building in operation. Works included new access roads, speed ramps/crossings and a new concrete pedestrian footbridge at the junction of two roads within the campus. New footpaths, bus shelters and cycle storage have also been installed.
