Project: Courtney Primary School

Client: South Gloucestershire Council

Value: £3.9m

Contract: JCT 2005 with Quantities

Duration: 56 Weeks

This new school building, which is part of the South Gloucestershire Primary Strategy for Change, provides seven classrooms and a hall on the same site as the existing schoo in Courtney Road. The children remained in the old premises until the school moved into their new, modern classrooms.

The building is single storey with many energy saving features, including a “Green Roof” of living Sedum plants. Ground source heat pumps will supply both the heating and cooling system and a grey water recycling system has been installed. Sun pipes have used for lighting in corridors and natural ventilation is used in the hall.

The construction site was segregated from the existing school by purpose made secure fencing. Additionally, demarcation lines were painted outside of the fencing to mark the extent of the works and keep pupils and staff well away from the site.

Viewpoints were set up around the site in safe areas for pupils to view progress. Pupils also attended workshops with the project team, to educate the children about the construction process and the importance of safety around construction sites. This has lead to the children being involved in a project to design safety posters for display around the area.

This project has been designed to achieve “BREEAM Very Good” rating.
