Ysgol-Y-Felin Primary School,

Llanelli

Client: Carmarthenshire County Council

Value: £4.7m

Contract: NEC Option C

Duration: April 2009 -June 2011

Client Brief:

The project forms part of the framework agreement between Carmarthenshire County Council and Cowlin construction to provide new or refurbish existing school buildings throughout the county.  The existing Felinfoel primary school is made up of an infant’s school and S.E.N. Block connected by an open corridor, along with a junior school which is housed in a separate building, on the same site but some 200m away.  The works consists of building a new extension to the existing infant’s school building, which will accommodate the infant children, and refurbishing the existing infant’s school building to accommodate the junior children.

Cowlin’s Solutions:

The new infant’s school will be constructed in a mixture of face brickwork and rendered blockwork with UPVC windows to match those on the existing infant’s school.  The ground beneath the new extension was found to have had considerable evidence of mine workings beneath the footprint which required extensive drilling and grouting before foundation work could begin. The foundations consist of reinforced concrete beams and suspended floor slabs.

The superstructure consists of a mixture of lightweight steel framing with a composite insulated panel system, covered with roof tiles forming a roof structure of traditional appearance.  The school will benefit from the latest electronic teaching aides and there will be extensive security and fire alarm systems along with external CCTV cameras for the protection of pupils, staff and property. Externally, there will be extensive play areas in a variety of materials which will enhance the learning experience of the children all enclosed in a 2m high perimeter security fence.  After the children in the existing junior school are re-located to the newly refurbished former infant’s school, the existing junior school building will be demolished.
