Project: Accident & Emergency Department, Royal United Hospital, Bath
Client: Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust Value: £4.6m Contract: JCT 1998 with Contractors Design Duration: 104 weeks
A new Accident and Emergency Department with Fracture and Elective Clinics in a very constricted site area within the existing hospital grounds.
Initially, temporary Accident and Emergency facilities were built, involving refurbishment of an adjacent ward. This then enabled the existing Accident & Emergency Department to decant, allowing demolition of the old building. The works were then sequenced over a two year period, with strong links formed with the Royal United Hospital management and staff in developing the design. The structure consisted of a steel frame with blockwork/rendered elevations, single storey in the main but with a three storey fire escape staircase joined to the existing hospital. New services were all fed from live hospital supplies, which involved planned shutdowns and the provision of a new stand-by generator. |
