Project: Acute Mental Health Unit, Llandough Hospital, Cardiff
Client: Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust Value: £4.6m Contract: JCT 1998 with Contractors Design Duration: 75 weeks
The structure of the building consisted of structural steel frame with traditional brick-block cavity construction, together with cavity wall insulation bats; the roof construction is aluminium liner panel/rockwood insulation and a standing seam top sheet in mill finish.
The approach to the building is via the newly constructed link road from the main hospital car park and the road and footpath slope down towards the main entrance which is at first floor level via the link bridge. Principally at ground floor level, there are 2 no. 19-bed wards, which are two wings off the central accommodation; each ward is further split into 2 no. areas, each with key day spaces serving them. Emphasis was made to create stimulating spaces, and the sensitive selection of finishes ensured a relaxing and calming environment for the users. Again externally, a sensitive selection of materials, predominantly of brick and render, together with standing seam roof, gave a contemporary aesthetic overview appropriate to the setting. |
