Project: Blue Reef Aquarium

Client: Blue Reef Leisure Company Ltd

Value: £1.56m

Duration: April 2009 - October 2009

Client Brief:  The project comprises the alteration and refurbishment of part of the @Bristol site on Bristol’s Harbourside to form a new world class aquarium and visitor attraction.

The WildWalk and Imax Buildings had been in need of redevelopment since their closure in 2007, and so the Blue Reef is a welcome addition to the public facilities on the harbourside.

Cowlin’s Solutions:  The original buildings were stripped out, refurbished and renovated in preparation for the alteration works.

There are 36 aquarium tanks housing fish ranging from Rain Forest and Marine through to British river species, as well as a large walk through tube tunnel with 360o vision.

The displays will also include mangrove, tropical rainforest and fast-moving river habitats alongside open-top tanks, caves, wooden walkways and bridges.

The works took place in a busy city centre location, surrounded by main commuter and bus routes.  The @Bristol site itself contains other visitor attractions, restaurants and open public spaces, and therefore great care was taken by the project team to minimize disruption to the other facilities nearby.
