Client: Wiltshire County Council Value: £8.9m Contract: JCT 1998 with Contractors Design Duration: 83 weeks Awards: SCALA Civic Building of the Year Awards 2008 - “Highly Commended”
The project comprised the construction of a landmark building of 3,980m² to provide the functions of a Record Office, County Local Studies Library, Archaeological Service, Conservation Service, Museum Service and Buildings Records Office, as well as surrounding external works.
The new building has three distinctive architectural elements a white rendered cedar clad and glazed Ground Floor Reading Room and Main Entrance with paved and sedum planted roof top terrace above; glazed First Floor Objects and Archives, Conservation Laboratories with museum and archive facilities and a two storey cream coloured masonry and grey metal panelled Strong Room block. A white rendered horizontal ‘altar cloth’ roof sits over the entire assembly, linking the three elements together, and serving as a horizontal distribution route for air-conditioning services. The external works comprise hard and soft landscaping around the building, a car park with access control and fencing to the boundary of the site. |
