Project: Newlyn Art Gallery, Newlyn and Penzance
Client: Newlyn Art Gallery Value: £2.3m Contract: JCT 1998 with quantities Duration: 42 weeks Awards: 2008 RIBA Award winner for the South West
A development that refurbished the much loved gallery at Newlyn as well as creating a brand new gallery at the Exchange in Penzance, provides two outstanding venues for the future development of creativity in Cornwall.
The works included internal alterations and a new two storey gallery extension to the existing Newlyn Gallery which was built in 1895, together with alterations and re-modelling to the ground floor of the former 1920’s BT exchange building in Penzance, the upper floors of which remained fully operational throughout the construction period. In each location new gallery space, retail, café and education spaces have been provided. The new gallery extension connects to the existing building via a glazed structure. The ground floor comprises four internal white concrete columns surrounded by full height glazing to add support to the apparently “floating” first floor, the roof and walls of which are clad with wet laid scantile slate tiling. In addition to the internal re-modelling of the exchange building, a new glazed façade has been erected around the ground floor. |
