Client Brief:

INTO specialise in providing teaching and residential solutions for international students on university campuses across the world.
The scheme will provide an academic building together with halls of residence housing 517 bedrooms on two sites within the University of Exeter Streatham and Duryard campuses.
Cowlin’s Solutions: The halls of residence are located in the centre of the University’s Duryard Campus, adjacent to a local residential area. The development consists of of five distinctive buildings, of three and four storeys, four of which are linked.  The buildings provide 517 bedrooms with en-suites, shared kitchens, laundry facilities, communal spaces and cycle storage. The superstructure is traditional build of brickwork with cedar wood and metal panelling with artificial slate roofs. internal
finishes include emulsion painted walls, kitchens and bedroom fitted furniture.  Kitchen and bathroom pods were used to provide speed of build and to ensure consistent quality.  The development has a full hard and soft landscaping scheme chosen with care to reflect the campus surroundings.

The project is designed to achieve BREEAM ‘very Good’ rating. the first phase of the contract for 187 beds was completed in December 2010 with the remainder following in April 2011. 

The considerate constructors monitor’s reports scored this project very highly at 37 points out of a possible 40.
