Project: John Fosters Almshouses
Client: Bristol Charities Value: £3.0m Contract: JCT Intermediate Duration: 66 Weeks
The project comprises the construction of a new three storey building, containing 18 no. self contained sheltered accommodation flats and incorporating the new ‘John Milton Clinic’ for the Bristol Primary Care Trust on part of the ground floor, plus associated external works.
The new almshouse replaces the almshouse located at the top of Christmas Steps in central Bristol, which was founded in the late fifteenth century by John Foster, a leading merchant of his day, who had a major stake in the extensive import of dried fish from Iceland. The accommodation has been specifically designed for the needs of older people and will include comprehensive wheelchair access and modern technology systems for communications and personal safety and security. The new building has also been designed to include energy saving technologies and will be of traditional build construction, using sustainable materials |
