Project: Nancy Astor Building, New Sports Hall, Office and Academic Facilities for University of Plymouth

Client: University of Plymouth

Value: £7.0m

Contract: GC Works 1

Duration: 52 weeks

This project consisted of the construction of a new 4,000 sq m building on the University of Plymouth campus to provide new offices, a sports facility, specialist teaching accommodation, a café/refectory and an energy centre. Achieved a BREEAM “Very Good” rating

The sports hall provides a four badminton court facility constructed to Sports England Level 2 and 3 and National League Standards, with a Fitness Centre and ancillary areas.

The office accommodation is provided in the form of an attached office block of circa 2,230 m2, with largely open plan office space, but incorporates a shell and core area on the lower ground floor for specialist teaching activities.

The café/refectory area (approx 200 m2) opens up onto an open podium overlooking the adjacent Drake’s reservoir and memorial garden.

The energy centre will be used to accommodate plant for this building now, but is designed to allow sufficient space for plant renewal and upgrading to the north for the campus in the coming ten year period.
